Shipping a car with PPF or ceramic coating: protect the finish plan

Paint protection film and ceramic coating come with product-specific care instructions. Transport planning should preserve those instructions from the installer to the receiving owner. Record exactly what was applied, when the work finished and any restrictions still in effect; “the car is protected” is not a complete handling brief.

What to know first

  • Obtain aftercare instructions for the exact film or coating installed.
  • Photograph existing film edges, finish defects and exposed panels before pickup.
  • Agree on transport shelter, permitted cleaning and any proposed protective materials.

Get the product and installation details.

Ask the installer for the product name, treated panels, completion date and written aftercare instructions. Identify whether the car has film, coating over film, coating on uncovered paint or several finishes. Give the transporter a short summary of restrictions that matter during collection and delivery.

Keep the installer’s contact available for questions. If a fresh application is being completed just before pickup, ask the installer to confirm readiness for the planned handling and exposure. A booked detailing appointment does not establish when the finished car can be released.

Plan around the actual aftercare window.

Do not apply one internet curing period to every product. XPEL, for example, lists different initial wash restrictions for different films: its care page specifies 48 hours for ULTIMATE PLUS and 72 hours for COLOR PPF. Those are washing instructions, not blanket transport-clearance times.

Ask the installer about expected weather exposure, handling and cleaning during your particular move. If the instructions cannot be met on the proposed schedule, discuss changing the release date or completing the treatment after delivery. Record the chosen arrangement so the seller and receiver follow the same plan.

Build a finish-specific condition record.

Photograph the whole car in usable light, then take close views of film seams, wrapped edges, front corners, door edges and existing marks. Include exposed panels if only part of the vehicle has film. Save the originals with the pickup date and vehicle reference.

Ask the installer to identify any known lifting edges, trapped contamination or areas awaiting correction before release. Do not describe every visible issue as transit damage later. A clear record makes it easier to distinguish a new concern from a pre-existing installation detail.

Choose shelter and handling explicitly.

Enclosed transport can reduce exposure to weather and road debris, but it is not a cleanliness or damage guarantee. Discuss the actual loading method, restraint arrangement and access around the vehicle. If the car is low or modified, provide measurements and request the necessary manual quote.

Tell the provider that finish care is a priority and ask how contact with delicate areas will be avoided. Protection film is not permission to rest equipment against the body. Confirm any unusual handling request before booking so it can be evaluated against the assigned equipment.

Approve covers, tape and cleaning before use.

Do not add a cover, adhesive film or tape without approval from both the product installer and the transporter. Ask whether a proposed material is compatible with the finish and appropriate for the transport environment. Loose or unsuitable materials can create their own handling problem.

Give the releasing and receiving contacts clear cleaning instructions. XPEL warns against directing high-pressure water near certain film edges and against aggressive products on its ceramic coating. Follow the exact product guidance; do not prescribe a universal solvent, polish or quick wipe for an unidentified finish.

Inspect before arranging corrective work.

At delivery, compare the visible finish with the pickup record and note any new concerns on the condition paperwork. Take clear photographs before cleaning or treatment changes the appearance. Follow the carrier’s reporting process promptly and retain the transport documents.

Ask the installer or an appropriate detailer to assess a questionable film edge, mark or coating issue. Avoid peeling film, polishing a panel or authorizing repair before documenting the concern and discussing the next steps with the relevant parties. Keep installation records and transport records together for reference.
